How to cut one-legger appointments
By the Renolist team · Oct 28, 2026 · 2 min read
A one-legger is an in-home appointment where only one of the people who decide is there. Most of them are decided on the booking call, long before your rep knocks. Ask who owns the home and who'll be part of the decision, book a time that works for all of them, and confirm with each of them before your rep drives out.
What a one-legger costs you
The rep's evening, a slot on the calendar, and a close that was never going to happen. One-legged appointments are far less likely to convert and more likely to cancel, and the homeowner who is there has the easiest objection in the business: "I need to talk it over." Even when one closes, the sale can be cancelled within the rescission period if the other person disagrees (Builder Prime).
Before the appointment
- Ask the right question on the booking call. "Besides you, is anyone else on the title or part of the decision?" works better than "Will your husband be there?", which assumes too much and can put people off.
- Use their words. If they say "my partner" or "my dad", use the same words for the rest of the call.
- Explain why both should be there. Couples ask different questions. Answering them together saves a second visit.
- Book around the harder schedule. Find the time that works for the person who's hardest to pin down, even if that's a Saturday.
- Confirm the day before, with both. Call or text the person you didn't speak to when you booked, by name.
- Tell them who's coming. A homeowner who knows your company's name, reviews and years in business is more likely to be home, and to have the other decision-maker there.
At the appointment
If one person is missing anyway, the rep decides: reschedule, or run a short version and book a time to come back with both. Either is better than a full presentation to half the decision.
Track it
Record one-leggers as their own outcome in your CRM, by source. Then compare your close rate on one-leggers with your close rate when everyone is there. That gap is what one-leggers cost you, and it shows which sources book them most often.
How Renolist handles it
Our team asks every homeowner on the qualifying call whether everyone with a say will be at the appointment. If the answer is no, we don't book it. If someone with a say is missing when your rep arrives, the appointment doesn't meet the criteria we agreed on, and you can flag it in your dashboard for a replacement credit.
